CDS of India, Significant, Uniform, Roles and Duties

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India has a prominent role in the Indian Military Services, acting as the highest-ranking uniformed official. This commanding position entails chairing the Indian Armed Forces’ Chiefs of Staff Committee and overseeing crucial military decisions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the establishment of the Chief of Defence Staff of India from the iconic Red Fort in 2019.

General Anil Chauhan  (PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM) a four-star general of the Indian Army, has been the Nation’s second Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) since September 30, 2022. He was born on 18th of May 1961 at Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand(earlier Uttar Pradesh)

On September 28, 2022, the BJP government led by Shri Narendra Modi brought Chauhan back from retirement and appointed him as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), using a June 2022 notice that eligible military retirees under the age of 62. India’s Present CDS- LT.GEN ANIL CHAUHAN

Anil Chauhan is the next Lieutenant General heading India’s Defence Staff.

 

  • The Ministry of Defence (MoD) published a gazette notice in June 2022 that said that any three-star officer under the age of 62 who is a lieutenant general, vice admiral, or air marshal—whether on active duty or retired—will be qualified for appointment as CDS.
  • The declaration elevated Gen. Anil Chauhan, who had previously resigned as a lieutenant general at the age of sixty, to the top of the list of eligible contenders.
  • At the time the announcement was made public, there were 14 army applicants qualified for the post, including both active-duty and retired officers, including Gen. Anil Chauhan.

Chief of Defence Staff of India (CDS): Overview

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is the permanent chairman of the Indian Armed Forces’ Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC). As the highest-ranking uniformed officer currently serving in the Indian military, the Chief of Defence Staff advises the Minister of Defence militarily. The Chief is in charge of the Department of Military Affairs as well. The Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, a vice-chief, supports the CDS.

General Bipin Rawat was the first CDS in India.

General Bipin Rawat took office as the first Chief of Defence Staff on January 1st, 2020. The position was established with the goal of improving the overall integration, coordination, and effectiveness of the tri-service combat capabilities of the Indian armed forces. When the role was created, there was no comparable post.

ROLE AND DUTIES OF A CDS-

  • At the time the position was created in December 2019, among other responsibilities, the CDS would oversee the Department of Military Affairs, command the tri-service agencies, prioritize capital acquisition proposals based on inter-services considerations, execute integration and jointness of the three services, and take part in overall defence planning.
  • In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDS emphasized the need to avoid “misrepresenting operational requirements,” give domestic industry a chance even with only 70% of the general staff qualitative standards, and avoid costly defence imports.
  • In February 2020, the CDS announced the creation of Integrated Theatre Commands, which are combined theatre and military commands, as well as the schedule for the theatresation process.
  • Under each command, soldiers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force will collaborate with one another.

UNIFORM OF CDS :

 

The Chief of Defence Staff wears the appropriately coloured uniform of their parent service, while the tri-service Indian Armed Forces emblem is worn in place of service insignia and unit emblems. It consists of the Naval anchor, crossed Army swords, and Air Force eagle, all topped by the national emblem of India.

In addition, shoulder flashes, shoulder rank badges for four-star officers, uniform button and belt badge service insignia, and shoulder rank badges for service chiefs can all be substituted with the wreathed tri-service emblem. The rank stars on the car pennant, which stand for the officer’s parent service, are replaced with the tri-service emblem.
