Bengals vs Ravens:

BALTIMORE — The game was billed as the most entertaining “Thursday Night Football” clash of the season. The Baltimore Ravens’ 34-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals fell short for a variety of reasons, with the score being secondary to the injuries sustained by top players.

Joe Burrow, the Bengals’ quarterback, left the game in the second quarter with a right wrist injury and did not return. Ravens tight end Mark Andrews was injured on the first drive of the game and did not return. His teammate, wideout Odell Beckham Jr. (four catches, 116 yards), left the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury. And Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was taken to the hospital with a leg injury after being hit near the Baltimore sideline.

Gus Edwards’ first running touchdown of the game gave the Ravens the lead four minutes and 58 seconds into the game. He also scored the game’s final touchdown for Baltimore, giving him nine in the last five games.

With Burrow out, Bengals running back Joe Mixon had a strong first half but struggled in the second. In the loss, he and Ja’Marr Chase both caught touchdown passes.

Lamar Jackson completed 16 of 26 passes for 264 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor, who concluded the play with a somersault over the goal line.

Bengals backup quarterback Jake Browning went 8-for-14 for 68 yards and a touchdown in relief.

Winners and losers from In The Match Of Ravens vs Bengals

WINNERS

Lamar Jackson performs well against the Bengals: Jackson was hampered by a sprained ankle for most of the game after being tackled by Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson, but it had little effect on his play.

The Ravens’ starting quarterback completed 16 of 26 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns.

Jackson is now 8-1 in his career against Cincinnati.

Jackson’s 4,918 career rushing yards entered the contest ranked seventh among quarterbacks in NFL history. He was only 10 yards short of Randall Cunningham’s (4,928) all-time quarterback rushing record. Early in the first quarter, Jackson surpassed Cunningham on the all-time list. In the triumph, he rushed for 54 yards. The Ravens’ dual-threat quarterback now has 4,972 rushing yards in his career.

Keaton Mitchell, the running back for Baltimore:

Thursday night, Baltimore’s running game by committee was successful.

Mitchell made a few flashes during the victory. A great 21-yard run was made by the rookie running back. Gus Edwards scored two touchdowns on 62 yards of rushes. Jackson, however, only managed 54 yards on the ground.

In the triumph, the Ravens ran for 157 yards and two scores. They gained 5.1 yards a game on average.

Baltimore’s ability to gain yards on the ground allowed them to take control of the game.

The finest performance by Odell Beckham Jr. as Raven:

Beckham appeared more formidable on Thursday night. It seems like he’s coming into his own. In the fourth quarter, the wideout caught a pass for 51 yards. With four catches in the end, he totaled 116 yards, a season high.

However, Beckham left the game with a shoulder injury late in the fourth quarter.

LOSERS

Injuries:  It became an attrition-based game on Thursday.

Joe Burrow, the starting quarterback for the Bengals, left the game in the first half due to a right wrist injury and did not come back.

Cam Taylor-Britt, the starting cornerback for the Bengals, missed the game due to a left quad injury.

On the team’s opening drive, standout tight end Mark Andrews of the Ravens hurt his ankle and was ruled out. It is the team’s worry, according to Ravens coach John Harbaugh, that Andrews sustained a season-ending injury.

It was late in the fourth quarter when Beckham hurt his shoulder. Even though it looked like Jackson hurt his ankle, he managed to play through the injury and win the game.

After Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson tackled Andrews, Beckham, and Jackson, all three players suffered injuries.

Wilson used the contentious hip-drop tackle to bring Andrews down. Wilson appeared to be hitting Beckham and Jackson with ordinary tackles.

Bengals offense:  The driving force behind Cincinnati’s offensive success is Burrow. With Burrow at quarterback, Browning gave the Bengals offense his best effort, but the team lacked explosiveness and originality.

Joe Mixon, the running back, was the Bengals’ only reliable offensive option without Burrow. Mixon ended with one score and 100 yards from scrimmage.

With four receptions for 116 yards, Odell Beckham Jr. was having his best game as a Raven, but he was forced to leave the game after what appeared to be a shoulder injury during his last catch. Ravens vs Bengals: A historical perspective

The Ravens’ first season following the Cleveland Browns’ suspension was 1996, which is when the Bengals and Ravens first developed a rivalry.

Although Cincinnati has won four of the last six meetings, including a 24-17 wild-card playoff victory last season, Baltimore still owns a 29-27 series advantage. Sam Hubbard, a defensive end for the Bengals, broke a 17–17 tie in the fourth quarter of that game by recovering a fumble 98 yards for a score. It was the play that decided the outcome. — James Reineck
